"Remli" Project Overview

"Urban Origin" is a research project undertaken by we+ that sees Tokyo as the place of origin of used materials and explores new value in waste by returning to the origin of the relationship between humans and materials, which is to "use indigenous materials and process them simply with our own hands."
Ambientec was inspired by the we+ project, which explores the origins of manufacturing, and has used its sophisticated technical skills and craftsmanship to elevate it into a symbolic, highly poetic light object.

At industrial waste recycling plants, materials such as small pieces of broken glass, ceramic waste, concrete rubble, and other debris are sent to landfills without being separated.
These waste materials, known as "residue," were picked up from the plant and crushed further into fine powder in a mill. They were then mixed with soil and used as a plastering finish to paint the surface of the lighting fixtures, and "Remli" was born.
The surface, which is made up of a mixture of various materials, takes on beautiful gradations when exposed to light, revealing a rich range of textures.

Materials that were destined for landfill become new, modern, indigenous materials and are integrated back into everyday life.

DESIGNER PROFILE

we+ / Contemporary Design Studio

Contemporary Design Studio

A contemporary design studio founded in 2013 by Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando, which uses methods based on research and experimentation to create new perspectives and values.

In today's society, where convenience and rationality are in demand, we value diverse values that are often overlooked, and explore the possibilities of alternative design that builds intimate coexistence with the natural and social environments. Members with diverse backgrounds and skills, including designers, engineers, researchers, and writers, come together to present independent projects born from their daily research both domestically and internationally. Utilizing the knowledge gained from these projects, we work on a variety of corporate and organizational projects, including commissioned work such as R&D and installations, branding, product development, spatial design, and art direction.

He has received numerous awards, including Dezeen Awards 2022 / Emerging Design Studio of the Year Public Vote (UK), FRAME Awards 2023 / Furniture of the year (Netherlands), Wallpaper* Design Awards 2022 / Best Elements of Surprise (UK), EDIDA 2019 / Young Designer of the Year Nominee (Italy), and the Japan Space Design Award Gold Prize. His works are on display at the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
